August 9, International Day of Indigenous Peoples
When you travel aboard the Jakare, in addition to admiring unique and stunning underwater worlds and landscapes, we offer you a journey toward others.
Indonesia is home to an estimated 50 to 70 million Indigenous Peoples. Aboard the Jakare, we have the privilege of meeting these fascinating communities and learning from their rich cultural heritage. Despite the challenges they face, such as criminalization and violence often related to investments in their territories, Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia proudly preserve their traditions and way of life.
Our journeys will take you to places like Raja Ampat in West Papua, a region with Indonesia’s richest cultural and linguistic diversity. With more than 250 tribal languages still spoken today, each encounter is an opportunity to broaden your horizons and better understand the world around us.
We deeply respect the Indigenous Peoples we meet during our travels. Our team is dedicated to preserving and recognizing the rights of the people known as Masyarakat adat or Masyarakat hukum adat. We strive to support their struggles to recognize and protect their lands, as acknowledged by the third amendment to the Indonesian Constitution and several key laws on agrarian regulation, human rights, and natural resource management.
Furthermore, most of the Jakare crew are of Bugis origin from Sulawesi, an indigenous ethnic group in Indonesia renowned for their exceptional seafaring skills. Their expertise in navigation and the sea makes every trip aboard the Jakare a safe and memorable experience.
By traveling with Jakare, you discover breathtaking landscapes and exceptional marine biodiversity and contribute to the appreciation and preservation of indigenous cultures. Join us in celebrating the International Day of Indigenous Peoples and embark on a respectful and enriching adventure, meeting the guardians of these ancestral lands.
Explore, learn, respect. Embark with Jakare Liveaboard and live an unforgettable experience.
