February, the month of Valentine’s Day, is a celebration of love in all its forms. At Jakare, we believe love goes beyond human relationships—it is reflected in the care and attention we give to our guests, our crew, and our environment. That’s why we have implemented new safety measures to ensure that every experience on board is not only magical but also serene and secure.
Fire Safety Training & Equipment
Safety starts with prevention. As a traditional wooden phinisi, Jakare is particularly sensitive to fire hazards. We have strict measures in place to minimize this risk. Our entire crew has undergone full fire safety training. We have upgraded our equipment and reinforced our protocols to ensure a fast and efficient response in case of an emergency. Regular drills are conducted to keep the crew prepared at all times.
Our fire safety equipment includes:
- Two self-contained breathing apparatuses for intervention in smoke-filled areas,
- High-quality protective gear for crew safety,
- A centralized fire alarm system for rapid detection.
As an extra precaution, we ask smokers to only smoke on the upper deck and always with the utmost care.
Emergency Plan & Strategic Partnerships
Sailing in remote areas requires flawless preparation. We have a detailed emergency plan and work with specialized partners to respond quickly in case of a medical evacuation or technical assistance. Every crew member is trained in first aid and emergency response.
Our partners include:
- An exclusive hyperbaric doctor consultation service in Singapore,
- A medical emergency assistance company in Bali, providing 24/7 access to emergency doctors and organizing medical evacuations when needed,
- Ongoing monitoring of medical facilities (hospitals, clinics) in the areas we operate to ensure the best possible care.
Our onboard medical equipment includes (in addition to our first aid kit):
- A complete emergency oxygen kit,
- A large oxygen reserve with 40L tanks,
- A defibrillator.
Dive Safety & Health: A Responsible Approach
Exploring the underwater world is a magical experience, but diving in remote locations requires extra precautions. We have implemented stricter safety rules to ensure the well-being of our divers and guests.
- Medical Questionnaire: All divers must complete a medical questionnaire and provide a diving fitness certificate from a doctor if required. This screening protocol is widely used in dive centers and recommended by the Diver Medical Screening Committee (DMSC) in collaboration with organizations such as DAN (US & Europe), the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, and the Hyperbaric Medicine Division, University of California, San Diego. - Mandatory Medical Certification for Divers Over 60: Divers aged 60 to 75 must provide a medical certificate from a hyperbaric or dive medicine specialist. Useful links to find a dive doctor:
- Médecins de plongée – Europe
- France
- Suisse
- Angleterre
- USA
- Canada
- South Pacific / Australie
- Diving Not Recommended for Those Over 75: While we do not completely forbid diving for guests over 75, we assess each case individually based on physical condition and experience. For those who choose not to dive, we offer many other activities, including snorkeling at breathtaking sites.
Why These Measures?
- We operate in extremely remote areas where medical care is limited.
- Standard PADI medical guidelines are not always suited for the isolated environments we sail in.
- We have previously encountered preventable medical emergencies related to pre-existing conditions that could have been detected earlier.
- Safety is a shared responsibility: each diver must take care of their health as well as that of fellow passengers.
Insurance: A Must for Peace of Mind
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance, as we do not provide refunds for last-minute cancellations due to medical or force majeure reasons (see our Terms & Conditions).
Additionally, up-to-date dive insurance is mandatory for all divers. Due to the remote locations we operate in, medical and evacuation costs can be high. We recommend recognized insurers such as DAN, Aquamed, Dive Assure, Lafont, and SafetyWing, which cover scuba diving activities.
From our side:
- Jakare is covered by P&I insurance (Protection & Indemnity), which covers passenger, crew, and third-party liability risks.
- Our instructors and dive masters are insured with DAN Pro, which provides specialized medical advice in case of incidents.
Your Well-Being Comes First
These new measures are not just rules—they reflect our deep commitment to your safety and happiness. This month of love is a perfect time to reaffirm our dedication to care, attention, and respect for our valued guests. Our crew puts their heart into ensuring you experience unforgettable moments in complete safety and trust.
We understand that these new requirements may affect some travelers. If you have any questions or concerns, we are available to discuss them and find the best solution together.
We look forward to welcoming you on board and sharing these unique moments filled with love and peace.
