Celebrating World Maritime Day: Jakare’s Commitment to Maritime Safety and Sustainability

On this year’s World Maritime Day, the global spotlight is on maritime safety and sustainability. François, the Owner and Operations Manager of Jakare Liveaboard, shares the brand’s unwavering dedication to these critical areas.

In an interview, François detailed Jakare’s commitment to safety in every aspect of its operations. This includes thorough safety briefings and advanced medical preparedness. He also elaborated on the sustainable practices integral to Jakare’s operations. These efforts balance adhering to modern safety standards and preserving Indonesia’s rich maritime heritage. The conversation sheds light on Jakare Liveaboard’s ongoing commitment to a safe and sustainable future.

The Interview

Interviewer: This year’s theme for World Maritime Day, “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”, feels particularly relevant to the work we do at Jakare Liveaboard. François, as our operations manager, can you tell us how Jakare prioritizes safety in its day-to-day operations?

François: Safety is the basis of our operations. From the moment guests step onboard, we emphasize safety in every aspect of their journey. We begin with a thorough safety briefing for all our guests. This covers everything from day-to-day onboard life, emergency procedures, and the location of first aid kits to what to do in case of fire or water-related emergencies. We want everyone to feel informed and confident throughout their stay.

Our team is equally prepared. We run regular fire drills and have invested in advanced fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, detectors, blankets, and firefighting kits. We’ve just acquired new fire-fighting uniforms and SCBA kits, significantly enhancing our crew’s ability to respond to emergencies.

Interviewer: That’s reassuring! Could you elaborate on the medical safety measures you’ve implemented on board?

François: Absolutely. We take medical safety just as seriously as fire safety. Our crew receives first aid training from emergency specialists, and we have both an AED and a comprehensive first aid kit onboard. We’re also expanding this by implementing an advanced first aid kit as part of an ongoing project.

One of our key partnerships is with Nusa Medica, which provides us with 24/7 access to experienced doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals. This means that in case of any medical emergency, we have immediate expert support. For diving safety, we maintain constant contact with a Hyperbaric Doctor in Singapore, ensuring our divers have an extra layer of protection.

Interviewer: It sounds like safety is a continuous investment. How do you ensure the ongoing safety of the boat and the crew?

François: We constantly strive to improve. All our crew members are certified according to maritime regulations, and we regularly train them in safety protocols. Their certifications are kept up-to-date, and we sponsor additional training as well. For us, safety isn’t a one-time achievement; it’s an ongoing commitment.

From a technical standpoint, we perform yearly maintenance on the boat’s structure, focusing on both above and below water. We also maintain a high level of spare parts for key equipment to ensure that everything is functioning smoothly at all times. We’ve even enhanced the boat’s seaworthiness by adding stabilizers and ballast to ensure smoother, safer voyages.

Interviewer: I know sustainability is also close to your heart. How does Jakare Liveaboard contribute to protecting Indonesia’s marine environment?

François: Operating a traditional phinisi wooden boat gives us a unique opportunity to blend modern comfort with sustainable maritime practices. We use the same traditional boat builders who constructed Jakare for our ongoing maintenance, which helps preserve their centuries-old craftsmanship. This supports local artisans and keeps the heritage of Indonesian boat building alive.

In terms of environmental impact, we promote marine conservation by educating our guests on how to respect and protect the marine life in areas we visit. Responsible tourism is at the heart of our approach, and we work hard to leave no trace behind, ensuring these pristine waters remain untouched for future generations. We also financially support the SEA People in Raja Ampa, which is a field-based non-profit foundation working to contribute to the protection of one of the last locations on Earth where coral reef systems still thrive.

Interviewer: On this World Maritime Day, how do you see Jakare contributing to the global focus on maritime safety and sustainability?

François: World Maritime Day is a great reminder of the collective responsibility we all have to keep our oceans safe and sustainable. Onboard Jakare, we’re proud to play our part, not just by adhering to the highest safety standards but also by promoting the beauty and importance of Indonesia’s maritime heritage.

We’re also encouraging guests to engage with this day by sharing their experiences with us on social media and participating in any local events that promote maritime safety and marine conservation. It’s a great way to raise awareness about responsible tourism and support the global effort toward safer and cleaner seas.

Join us in safely navigating the future!

As François highlighted, Jakare Liveaboard remains dedicated to safety and sustainability in every voyage. This World Maritime Day, we’re proud to join the global movement toward safer seas and more sustainable maritime practices. Whether you’re exploring Indonesia’s vast archipelago or celebrating from afar, we invite you to join us in honoring this commitment to the future of our oceans.
